toolbar problems

Hiya. I am newly returned to the Apple fold after too many years as a
Windows user. I am learning my way through MacWord but have come up
against a few problems. I am having the absolute devil of a time
keeping customized toolbars for my MacWord from just disappearing. I
have the most recent version of MacWord on my new MacBook (less than a
month old). I create a toolbar as shown, save it with a name and it
will then (usually) appear for the next few boot-ups, but then
eventually it will just be gone from the menu. pfft. Is there an
additional save I am supposed to do?

A parallel question... how to create a vertical toolbar? I stumbled
on this once but could not recreate it delberately. I like this
option as I can then push my buttons off to the right and not use
valuable horzontal territory on my narrow screen.

Thanks in advance.

Hello and welcome to the macworld again.
To change horizontal toolbar to verticial and vice versa- look at your
toolbar - the right bottom corner of the toolbar looks a bit different than
the others - drag that corner and resize your tool bar to 1 row or column.

About disappered custom menu - try to make your menu then hold shift and do
FILE>save all. If that will solve the problem.

Then quite and open new blank document navigate to view>toolbars>and make
sure custom is checked.
If this will not help post back

Welcome back to the Mac! :)

Re the disappearing custom menu--

First, just to make sure since it's easy to misunderstand--when you say
"gone", you have tried using View | Toolbars | [Select Custom] to turn
it back on, right? The toolbar is truly gone, it's not just that Word
has forgotten to show it, correct?

Assuming the toolbar is truly gone--by default, custom toolbars and
menus are saved in the Normal template, which is the basis for all new
documents, a scratchpad while you work, and a home for customizations.
Your report suggests that something is happening to your Normal
template, which is usually at:
~/Documents/Microsoft User Data/Normal (where ~ stands for your user
account in OS X)

Are you working in a corporate environment where someone might be
changing your Normal template to achieve standard formatting?

Have you been moving or deleting your MUD folder or anything inside it?
(~/Documents/Microsoft User Data)

The Shift-File | Save All procedure that little_creature recommended
forces your Normal template to save immediately, instead of waiting
until you quit Word. When you quit Word, if you get a message about
"Save changes to Normal template?" say yes, if you have been making
customizations.

Alternative approach--

Bypass saving the custom toolbars in the Normal template and save them
in a Global template. More information about this here:

Thanks much for the suggestions. I'll start working on them now. If
there is anyone at fault, it is only me as this is my home Apple and
not networked to anything else, but yes, the toolbars seem to be truly
gone. The MUD folder was an unknown to me, so I may be guilty of
opening it to take a peek, but I never trash anything I'm uncertain
exactly what it is, so everthing should still be there. I'll read
more on Normal and Global templates so I can become more informed.
Thanks all for the help! I'll be back after I work through this
somemore. cricket

Let me add to your confusion :)

A toolbar must be installed in a "File". That file can be either the
document you are working on, the template attached to that document, or the
Normal template.

Unless you do anything special (and you would know about it if you did) your
custom toolbars will be stored in your Normal template. You have to
explicitly change the destination to save toolbars anywhere else.

So the other users are suspecting hat something is replacing your Normal
template.

You're not calling it "Normal.dot" are you?? There's a bug in Mac Word: it
can use templates with or without the extension to the file name, created in
either Mac Word or PC Word. The bug is that unless the Mac Word normal
template has no extension, Mac Word will reject it and create a new one each
time it opens. To cure this, make sue the Normal template in Mac Word is
saved with the file name "Normal" and no extension.

The other thing you need to ensure is that the toolbar you are working with
has a name that you created. You cannot name a toolbar the same as a
built-in toolbar.

It's a bad idea to customise the built-in toolbars. You can do so, but if
you do, corruption of the Normal template is likely.

Hope this helps

If you customize, you can for example create a new toolbar and pull across
to it the buttons that you want to retain that were on the built-in
toolbar(s). Then close the built-in toolbar(s). The customized toolbars are
then easily backed up via Organizer.

Okay, thanks to all the tips here my problem seems resolved. I made
(yet again) my two customized toolbars, made sure they were saved in
'normal' without any extension and I have not touched my MUD folder.
And so far, after opening/closing/on/off... my toolbars still exist!
I even got one vertical. That was a bit tricky. I clicked on the
little funny-looking corner of the new toolbar stem and although it
didn't change visibly, the icons were accepted vertically. It seems
that the toolbar with the fonts/size/format 'icons' must go
horizontal, or at least that is all I can get it to do so far. :)

Next quandry... I've discovered that I can customize the color of my
finder windows but I can't seem to get the color to 'stick'. I
select view>show view options>this window only and then select a
color. The next time I go back to that finder screen more often than
not another color has appeared. And at times it does not appear to be
a color I have selected in my wanderings (I am most emphatically not
partial to flaming orange!!). While not as inconvienent or maddening
as the toolbars, I am flummoxed. Suggestions?

Using the lower right corner to stretch the bar will allow you to use a
variety of configurations from one row horizontal to one column vertical. As
you've found, though, in a one-column-vertical configuration combo boxes
(lists) turn into buttons automatically. Their operation also changes to
bring up the appropriate dialog when clicked rather than dropping open to
display a list of choices. The behavior of those controls cannot be modified
(at least not without programming).

I can't help you with this for two reasons - 1) it isn't something I've done
much with & haven't experienced the problem & 2) This is a Finder issue in
OS X not controlled by anything in Office. You might inquire in the Apple
