She may have been referring to the list on the toolbars tab of Tools |
Customize. Luckily, there are half a dozen ways to get to the Customize
dialog. I have no idea what F11 might do, but the "missing menus" problem is
a common enough one (most prevalent in Word 2000).

I realized later that she was talking about the Menu Bar and not a
toolbar. But if it's the Menu Bar that's gone, how can she have
checked View > Toolbars?
Maybe she was in Reading View (or whatever it's called)? I hate that
and can never find how to get out of it if I accidentally click it
when trying for Outline View.
Alternatively, when I'm on line, F11 toggles the display of everything
above my tabs, so could this be a Windows thing?
