Toolbars in Office XP

When I change toolbar settings in any of the Office XP
applications, then close the application, on opening it
again, even with the same document, the toolbar settings I
chose are not kept.

This means that every time I open a document I have to
close the toolbars I don't need, only to have those same
toolbars appear again when I open it next time. Even if I
delete the offending toolbars, they spring back to life
again when I reopen the application! This is a
frustrating waste of time. Any suggestions?

Are you talking about ALL the applications, or only a few?

In particular, Microsoft Word and Excel, which are the only ones I use regularly
