Toolbars

With Excel 11, (Excel 2004), Toolbars were not connected with any window. As far as I can tell they are with Excel 12 (Excel 2008), tied to each spreadsheet. I usually have 5-10 spreadsheets opened when I am using Excel for Income Tax Prep.

This seems to be a trend, as Apple does the same thing with Numbers.

Any ideas as to what I can do with Excel 12, or must I stay with Excel 11?

Your point is well taken, but as you said out this is behaviorial trend was
started by Apple & is the way it's specified in the OS X user interface
guidelines. MS is - as I understand it - simply complying with those
guidelines. further, thee is no preference within the program or the OS to
change the design.

That Apple recommends it doesn't mean it isn't bullshit
guidelines. further, thee is no preference within the program or the OS to

Office 2008 allows to create custom toolbars and float/un-dock them.
Just drag all the standard stuff into one, then hide the window toolbar.
For some reason custom tool palettes look a little different from the
built-in ones, but behave like they used to in older versions :)

That's for reminding me of what MS kept, but did enough different that I missed the item. I'm not supposed to be messing around with new software now as I already have 20+ hours of work to do each day.

That's for showing me that I did not look very far for things. In Excel 11 I use I custom toolbar that is the width of my 23" screen. It have the items that I use & can't be done with the keyboard.

There still is a problem at least with my system. I can put this new toolbar that you so kindly reminded how to make. But then if I move my open Excel file I can not place the file higher on the screen than this menu line. This usually means that I will loose use of areas of my screen or screens. Do you know of a way I can correct this problem other than keeping all of my screens below the horizontal line formed this toolbar. Other than the loss of Macros in Excel 12 & the very, very slow scroll & movement on what I would call a small sized spreadsheet, this is one of the important things that will keep me from using Excel 12.

I really shouldn't be messing around with Excel12 now as I already have 20+ hours a day of work to do. But that's the way life is.

I will try to post this on the MS site if I have the time.

Thanks again,

Excel X had a bug where windows would unprovoked grow until their title
bar was obscured by the toolbar and the only way to get at it was to
focus a different application and cmd+drag.

The fact that 2008 does not allow windows to be moved all the way to the
OS menubar may be a fix for this.

I have no idea how this could inconvinience you.

But if you keep your tool palette a few pixels away from the menubar
instead of snapped to it Excel will cease to consider it an obstacle.
