Toolbox - Putting Photos in Email Message

L

Lynn Quinlan

Hi there,

I have Leopard 10.5.6 with Office 2008 latest update.

In a new HTML e-mail message I want to drag one of my photos across using
Toolbox so that it appears in the e-mail.

The problem? It works on my MacBookPro but not on my iMac. Any clues
please as to what settings I should be checking? On the iMac I drag the
photo over and a very small cursor icon appears (like a 6 pt size with no
picture). I've looked all over and can't resolve this. As far as I know my
settings are identical and it's only the photos (from iPhoto folder) that
won't copy over to the e-mail.

Suggestions much appreciated. Thanks!

Lynn

Are you using the same version of iPhoto on both Macs?

Hi again,

I've been checking around and have a clue now as to what the problem is but
I don't know how to resolve it.

All the programs are the same on both computers, both are the same release
of iLife (2008), Office (2008), Leopard (10.5.6), even the memory (2 GB).

I've isolated the problem to being to do with the size of the JPEG file to
be used. I'm not exactly sure what the cut-off number of kB or MB is for
file size, but none of my 2.0+ MB photos will import into the message.
Anything under 500 kB is fine.

Is there a setting somewhere that can be changed to allow the larger photos
to be dragged across into the message?

Thanks once again.

Entourage 08 does not show .jpgs over 400KB.

I suggest you learn how to reduce the size of your photos. If you really
need the larger size, check out ways to send large attachments. Just do a
Google search for "send large attachments Mac."

Hi again,

Thanks for the update on the file size. Much appreciated. As to showing
the photos, they are all displayed in Toolbox photos (from iPhoto). They
just won't go into the message.

Now, does anyone have suggestions on how the file size can be reduced,
seeing as the photos are from iPhoto which imports from a camera. Is there
a way to reduce the size without affecting the original iPhoto picture?
Perhaps a shortcut?

On the other hand, after some further investigation, I find I can copy and
paste the larger files from the Photos/iPhoto folder in Toolbox. That's one
way around it! Still, a way to reduce the file sizes would be beneficial,
so, any suggestions please?

Dragging in from the entourage toolbox, you can't sdjust the size.

However, in iPhoto itself, if you use the 'mail picture' toolbar button,
you get a dialog asking what size of image you want to send - this can
reduce the file size of the image sent without affecting the size of the
image stored in iPhoto.

If you're planning to mail photos from iPhoto, be sure you go into iPhoto's
Preferences, the General Tab, and choose Microsoft Entourage dropdown list
of "Email photos using".

You can still use the Object Palette to pull from iPhoto and use it to
adjust the size of your pictures.

While viewing your photos in the Object Palette look for the tiny arrow
in the upper right corner and click it. This will flip the Object
Palette to reveal its options. Select the appropriate "Photo Insertion
Size".

Hope this helps!

Well, what do you know? I just learned something new about Entourage!

Thanks Bill.
