Hello,

I have two projects P1, P2

They are filed in different folders: F1 and F2.

Now if I set Tools > Options > Save in Project P1 to point to F1
then I find this ALSO changes the destination folder for P2 to point
to F1. Then if I point either project to F2 - that gets set for both

So, there is some GLOBAL parameter that is being set for all
project file folder destinations. I do not want this - I want
different folders for different projects.

I find with the current set up I often file a project in the
"wrong" place and it becomes a big mess.

Solutions anyone?

Clive,

I'm not quite sure I fully understand what you are doing. Standing
behind your shoulder would help.

What you want is how Project works (or at least I think so).

If you open the file, Project will remember the full path from where it.
If you simply Menu: File/Save it will go back to the right unchanged
place. You can keep both files open same time, and each time you save
it it will go back right. If you do a Menu: File/Save As, then you have
the opportunity CHANGE the location and it's at this point you have to
pay attention what you are doing. But I'm not sure this is needed. Are
you doing File/Save As to cause this.

There can be only one default file save location, but that's ok in my
experience.

There is an initial default file location that is set in the Tools
Options menu. When you go to open a file, this folder is displayed in
the File Open dialog box. When you initially save a new file, either
using the toolbar diskette icon or the File Save menu selection, this
default folder is also the first to be displayed. But in both of those
dialog boxes there is a pulldown box at the very top, where the default
folder name is displayed, where you can change the target to any folder
you like, create new folders on the fly to receive the file you're
saving, etc. As Rob pointed out, when you open an existing file from
any folder, Project will remember where it got it and that will be the
target location for subsequent saves of that file unless you explicitly
change it with the File, SaveAs menu option as well as the default
retrieval location for subsequent File, Open operations in the same work
session. All this is the standard MS Office file procedures and in that
regard Project is identical to Word, Excel, etc. You didn't mention
which version of Project you had, but in the Office 2002 and 2003 level
products, including Project, you can customize the icon list on the left
side of the file-open and file-save dialog boxes to add shortcuts to the
folders you most often use. You might find that more convenient than
using the navigation pull-down list at the top of the box.

Unless you have a lot of additional documents - budget worksheets, word
documents, etc - associated with each project that you need to keep in
their own project specific folders to keep them separated from similar
files for other projects, another solution is simply to give each
Project mpp file a nice descriptive filename and keep them in the same
folder. After all, you have up to 255 characters, preserving case and
with spaces and some punctuation characters permitted, for the filename
so something like "Power Dam on Upper Wahoo River, 1st Phase -
Preliminary Plan.mpp" is perfectly ok and should tell you at a glance
if you're opening the right file or not.
