In Word 2003 I was attempting to add a line above an equation
using the outside border controls over some highlighted text. I
clicked the top border and even used Format>Borders and
Shading the same problem occurred... Everything defaulted to
the full box option.
I'm not sure what kind of line you're looking for, but there's a
template for this in Equation Editor (EE). First, notice that
whenever you hover the mouse pointer over anything in EE, a
status bar message will tell you what it is you're pointing to.
(The status bar is the bottom of the window.) Point to the 6th
palette from the left on the second row (the palette to the right
of the integrals palette. Notice the status bar says "Underbar
and overbar templates". Click this palette. (You don't need to
hold down the mouse button. If you click & release, the palette
will stay down.) The overbar template is the first one listed
(first column, first row). Point to this one and the status bar
says "Over-bar". Click it, THEN type your equation.
IF you've already got your equation typed and it's in the Word
document, double-click it to open it in EE. Select the entire
equation by dragging the mouse pointer over it (or using the
Ctrl+A shortcut). NOW click the overbar template, and it will
"wrap" around the equation. Press the Esc key on the keyboard to
close the equation and return to Word.
