Contrary to what is asserted in the August 3, 2004 version of Microsoft
Knowledgebase article 875556, the
CDROM Drive\COMPS\MICROSOFT OFFICE ONENOTE 20030\MANUAL
directory on the Toshiba Recovery and Applications / Drivers DVD for the
m205 does NOT contain any B21654A.exe file and it is therefore impossible to
use that disk either to reinstall OneNote (as the Toshiba recovery
application says it will) or for purposes of an update from the Office
Update Web site.
I encountered this problem because I uninstalled the default OneNote
installation in order to apply the SP1 preview, as the Microsoft
instructions said I should. I first checked the Toshiba revocer disk to be
sure (I thought) that I could reinstall the original version, and OneNote
is, indeed, included in the list of applications that can be re-installed
that way. However, when I tried to re-install the original version so that
I could apply the final version of the service pack, the installation
program stopped immediately after I entered my product key with the
following error:
"Microsoft Office OneNote Setup cannot continue because the installation
source has been corrupted."
This error was always repeated. When I first called Toshiba support, they
had me try to install other applications listed in the Toshiba installation
utility. All of them worked fine. Only Microsoft OneNote failed. They
managed to persuade me that I needed a new Toshiba Recovery and Applications
/ Drivers DVD, and like a sucker I agreed to pay nine bucks shipping and
handling. The disk came yesterday and is identical in all respects to the
one I had before. Same problem with OneNote installation. I called Toshiba
technical support again, told the tech the whole story, he gave me
Microsoft's 800 support number and said I would have to call them, even
though the Toshiba Recovery and Applications / Drivers DVD says on its face
that support for it will be provided by Toshiba. I called Microsoft, got
disconnected once, then was told I would have to talk to Toshiba or pay
Microsoft's support fee. They connected me back to Toshiba. This time
Toshiba referred me to an "Advanced" technical rep who had me run sfc
/scannow and tried to convince me that my problem stemmed from having
missing operating system files. Meanwhile, I found Knowledgebase article
875556 and confirmed that the file mentioned in that article was not present
on the Toshiba DVD. I told the Toshiba tech this and he goes to confer with
some supervisor, then comes back and tells me that the Microsoft article is
wrong. I told him it was obvious to me that the recovery disks for the m205
are all defective.
Shortening the story somewhat, I finally ended up with a customer relations
representative who told me that my only option was to do a complete system
restore. She had no answer to my point that a complete system restore would
not solve the problem of using Office Update Web site as described in
knowledgebase article 875556, but refused to do anything but send me another
recovery disk at my expense.
Needless to say I am not pleased and will never again buy anything with the
Toshiba name on it.
