Total Summary Duration

N

Nilu Talreja

Dear All,

I had two tasks Task A and Task B.
AA 7 days -Summary Task
Task A duration is 4 days - subtask
Task B duration is 3 days - subtask

While updating actual duration Task A actual duration is 3 days and
Task B also 3 days.
After updating actual start date and end date in tracking table :
It is showing like this
AA 5.88 days -Summary Task
Task A duration is 3 days - subtask
Task B duration is 3 days - subtask

Why summary task is not showing total duration of 6 days
can any help me on this.

Thanks in advance.

Bye

Hi Nilu,

A summary task is not meant to show the total duration.
Duration of a summary task is the time between the start of its earliest
subtask and the finish of its final subtask.
That only is the sum of both durations if they follow each other perfectly.
Still, you may wonder why you get a decimal duration.
If that is the case I can recommend a visit to
http://www.mvps.org/project/faqs
Read FAQ 5. Default working hours.

Nilu,

First of all, did I understand correctly that you entered actual start
and finish dates? You should avoid entering any date other than the
Project Start Date, unless you have an absolute date, such as the
arrival of a shipment of parts.

Secondly, the summary task is a summary of the information contained
in the subtasks. The Duration of the summary task is not the total of
the Durations of the subtasks, but the amount of time between the
Start of the first task, and the Finish of the last task. If your two
tasks overlap at all (apparently they overlap by .12 days), then the
summary Duration will be less than the total of the task Durations.

Hope this helps!

Hi Sarah,

Thanks for helping me.
I am very much clear that duration of summary task is not the
summation of duration of subtasks.
But Task A is starting on 1 OCt 03 to 4th Oct 03 Duration -4 days
and Task B is starting on 6th OCt 03 to 8th Oct-03 Duration is - 3
days

Now Summary task AA is starting on 1st oct 03 to 8th Oct-03 - 6.88
days

How this is possible ?
Actually it should show total 7 days.
Task B is FS to Task A
and i had define 6 days a week. and 8hrs working time.
that's why task B is starting on 6th as 5th Oct is sunday -nonworking
day
and my both the tasks are not overlapping at all.
and even resources assigned to both the tasks are different.
even they are not overallocated. and resource calender is also 6 days
in week.

Still i had confusion in this?

Can you please help me in this?

Thanks.
Nilu

Hi Jan,

Thanks for helping me. I had read the FAQ 5 of the site. My problem is
with decimal point in duration calculated?
why i am getting duration like 6.88 days.?
even my tasks are not overlapping?
actually i should get 7 days for the summary tasks.

can you please check?

Thanks.

Task durations may be based on a resource's calendar
Summary task durations are based on the project calendar

Nilu,

Did you look at the times of the start and finish dates? If the first
start time is not the beginning of the workday, or the last finish
time is not the end of the day, then it would not be a full seven
days. MS Project uses date AND time in the Start and Finish fields.

Hi Sarah,

I had checked times of the start and finish dates. First task is
starting on time i.e beginning of the workday and last finish time is
on the end of the day.
i had cross checked the same.
Still i am in confusion for this?
pl. guide.

Thanks.
