total summary task durations

why the subtasks does not add up correctly into the corresponding summary task?
Ex: 5 subtasks= 2 days each but the summary task of those 5 says is
calculated by Project for only 3days.

Thanks! I really need to fix this in order to move forward....

brenda,
First of all do you have calculation (Tools/Options/Calculation tab) set
for automatic? If not, set it. Second, the duration of a summary line is
the difference in working time between the start of the earliest subtask
and the finish of the latest subtask under the summary. Thus if all 5 of
your subtasks are in parallel except for one which is delayed by 1 day,
the summary will show a total duration of 3 days.

Hello Brenda,

The duration of a summary task is calculated based upon the start of the
earliest subtask to the end of the latest subtask. I assume that your tasks
start the same day and are running in parallel, not in sequence (one after
the other).

Perhaps you are also looking for the total *work* to appear on the Summary
task not total duration. If you have 5 tasks each with 2 days duration and
one resource assigned to each task at 100% assignment units, each task has 16
hours of work (assuming 1 day = 8 hours) and the total amount of work on all
subtasks is 80 hours.

I hope this helps. Let us know how you get along.

Julie
