totaling up after import

Hello,
I am importing from an excel file using a map.
I have items like task, effort, resource, etc...

I only have effort for the tasks. I do not have totals for the groups.
For example I import
outline task effort resource name
1 T1
2 T2 10 John
2 T3 8 mary

When importing everything is good.
Except I cannot get T1 to be a total of T2 + T3.
Is there a way to make this happen? Without having to change my import
file.

thanks

Hello Greg,

Is task one set as a summary task in Project? If I recall
correctly, an import will not change outline levels to make task 1 a
summary task.

I hope this helps. Let us know how you get along.

Make sure you are mapping to the correct fields. The only way for an import
to create Summary Tasks is to use the Outline Level field. If by Effort you
mean Work, then map to this field.

This worked for me:

Outline Level,Name,Work,Resource Names
1,T1,,
2,T2,10,John
2,T3,8,mary

It created a T1 summary task that rolled up the work from T2 and T3. I
prefer to use commas instead of tabs for list separators but tabs should
also work.

Thanks all.
I think on the import I was not using work correctly.
I think it is working now.

However, what about start date?
if T2 and T3 have a start date of 1/20/2010
when importing, they are correct. However T1 starts at the current date.
Is there a way to the outline level to start at the first task?

Hi

While doing import/export of data between MSP and Excel, one useful tip-
First create a list of tasks in MSP. Map this column in Excel file. Now in
Excel file, input data in cells in front of appropriate sub-tasks and
copy/paste column in MSP or map through export option. Automatically Summary
task in MSP file will summarise sub-tasks information.

I hope it helps.

Hi greg,

That is not usual behavior. The start and finish dates of summary
tasks are driven by the start and finish of the subtasks. Check the
project start date and ensure you are not importing any dates for
the summary tasks.
I hope this helps. Let us know how you get along.

Is it in Manual Calc mode? Press F9 to calculate. If this works make sure
it's set to automatically calculate by going to Tools-Options-Calculation
and click Automatic.
