Totals of tick boxes

I have a report where I have a field from a table. The field is called
arrest. It is a tick box field. Each record could have many tick boxes. I
want to count the number of tick boxes and show the total at the end of the
report. I've used =Sum(Abs([Arrest])) but this doesn't seem to work. Anyone
any ideas?
