Totals when using filter

In Microsoft Excel 2000 (9.0.6926 SP-3) When I put the
filter on a spreadsheet and choose an item to filter on
and then do the total command everything looks good.
However, when I change to something else I want to filter
on, the total reads incorrectly... Please help.
