track changes - changes show up under different name (A. Stratton)

V

Valerie

I'm using the "track changes" feature in Word, going back
and forth between my office computer (Word 2000) and my
home computer (Word 97). Some of the changes are
associated with my name, but other changes (changes that I
specifically remember making myself) are associated with
the name Allan Stratton. I've never heard this name
before. Any idea what might cause this? My anti-virus
software is up-to-date; I checked my computer for spyware,
but didn't find anything more than a few cookies.

(For example, in one spot in the document, it
said "MicroSoft". I deleted the upper-case S, and
inserted a lower-case s. The insertion shows up under my
name, but the deletion shows up under Allan Stratton's
name."

The current speculation (thanks to MVP Shauna Kelly, who has researched
this) is that the name is coming from a global template or add-in that
contains an unaccepted tracked change made by Allan Stratton. Here's what
Shauna suggests:

Add-ins can be loaded when Word starts if they are stored in the folder
given at Tools > Options > File Locations > Startup. So to
test my theory, you could exit Word, use Windows Explorer to move all the
files in that folder to another folder somewhere else.
Then re-start Word. Is Mr Stratton still with you? If not, put those files
back one by one until you find the one that triggers the
arrival of Mr Stratton.

If that doesn't work, then exit Word, find normal.dot (it will be in the
folder shown at Tools > Options > File Locations > User
Templates). Re-name it as OldNormal.dot, then re-start Word. Any luck there?

[You might be able to accomplish the same thing without restarts by
deselecting all the add-ins in Tools | Templates and Add-ins and then
rechecking them one by one till Mr. Stratton reappears.]

I tried each of those suggestions, and none of them
worked. No matter what I did, Allan Stratton was still
there. Any other ideas?

Yes, see the thread in this NG beginning on July 16 with the subject line
"Reviewers has a name I don't know. Alan Stratton??" AFAIK, this is the
first time the issue has ever surfaced, suggesting that if the problem *is*
caused by an add-in, it's one that's been developed/published recently.

Suzanne,

Thanks for replying to my post. Am I to understand, from
your reply, that you (or others) have seen this before?
Is it seen with the same name, or different names?

Thanks,

Hi Valerie

I haven't tried this, but you could look to see if any COM add-ins are present. There are instructions for how to do this at
http://www.mvps.org/word/FAQs/Customization/CheckIfAddinsInstalled.htm

However, my testing suggests that just ticking and unticking the global template add-ins at Tools > Templates and Add-ins isn't
enough to turn Reviewers' names on and off. Once they're displayed, they last for the entire session. So you would have to check
each file one by one, opening and closing Word for each test.

Hope this helps.

There has been a report in another group that Allan works or worked
for Scansoft, which provided an add-in for the Text Bridge OCR
application. This application is present on many computers from Compaq
as part of a printer installation. The add-in TBRUN97.DOT is the
problem. Apparently Alan left an unaccepted tracked change in the
add-in.

The reviewer list that Word shows you is not a list of reviewers of
the document. It ought to be, but it isn't. Instead it is a list of
all reviewers of all open documents and templates. So the reviewer of
an unaccepted change in an add-in will appear to be a reviewer of
every document that is open.
