Track changes colors change

Office 2003.

Usually my changes show up in red, and a second editor's changes are in blue. However, every now and again I will open up a document
I've been working on and my changes will appear in a different color - green, say - including those I made previously which were
previously in red. Then, the following day, they might change back to red again, or another color altogether.

(The color setting on the track changes tab remains 'red' throughout.)

This doesn't affect functionality, but I'd be interested to know why it happens.

I don't think anyone really understands how Word assigns colors when you
choose By Author. All that can be said for sure is that (a) you give up all
control of the choice, and (b) *in theory*, your changes should be in a
different color from anyone else's (but there are no guarantees that
anyone's color will stay the same, and the colors will definitely be
different on different systems).
