Track Changes Error - "document is too complex"

S

Scott

I'm using Word 2004 on Mac OSX 10.3.8. Whenever I try to use track
changes, after a few edits I get a message as follows:

"The formatting in this document is too complex. Please full save the
document now."
From here, I am not able to use track changes, whether highlight
changes on screen is checked or not. I can't seem to find anything in
preferences that helps with this.

Any help any of you might provide would be nice.

thanks.

Perhaps this message means that you have "fast saves" turned on. If so,
turn it off. (Never, never, never use fast saves.) m.

It can also be that the user has left Tracked Changes ON and is unaware of
that.

Many users turn off "Highlight changes on screen" thinking they have turned
off the tracking of changes. They haven't, but they will now be unable to
see whether changes are being tracked in the document.

If you edit any document for long enough with tracked changes on, the
collected changes will eventually make the document too complex. In that
case. The error message means exactly what it says.

You need to save, close, and re-open the file to get rid of it. When you
do, Word writes a "clean copy" of the document to disk, which removes a lot
of the complexity. However, if you don't turn Track Changes OFF (or accept
the changes in the document...) the error will soon return.

Hope this helps

Hi Lynn,

OS X is a completely different system from OS 9 and earlier. There is no
longer any need to adjust memory for applications; in OS X, memory is
allocated by the system as needed, as long as there is sufficient RAM.
