Track Changes - Keeps Same Color, Different User

We are using Word 2000. We turned on track changes. We sent the document to
our customer (via e-mail). When we received the edited document back, we
could see their changes in "green" font color. When we go to make our edits
to the document, we are seeing our edits in "green" too!. We should be
seeing our edits in a different color. We have tried changing our color
(under Tools ==> Options menu) and when we do, ALL the edits from the
customer are changed to the new color!
We did a "test" -- we have tried routing a different document iwith track
changes turned on (internal to the company) and the track changes works fine
-- could it have something to do with sendng the document outside of the
company?
We are perplexed -- HELP please! Thanks
