track changes

I edit books and make a lot of changes in the original manuscript. I also use the comments feature a lot. Here are the problems: listing formatting and word changes either in balloons or on a separate page is confusing and unnecessary. They appear in the text as crossouts and/or additions. There are so many of them that listing them makes the document too messy. Also, if I turn off the balloons, it is impossible to find the comment that goes with a particular insertion point. They are not numbered. Ideally, what I would like would be for all formatting and word changes to show up in the text ONLY and the comments to show in balloons. Is there any way to achieve this
