Track Changes

I'm having an issue with Track Changes....I don't want to see them at all. Every document I open that has used track changes always opens with them on, never in the final look. I don't want to send a client something that will open with all that on.

Is there anyway to make sure they turn off and stay off after I have accepted all of the changes and saved??

Hey

I had this problem too. I actually submitted a paper to a scientific journal and when i got the automatic PDF, I got the shock of my life when all of my corrections were there, even though they were not in the version I thought I had sent and saved. See, every time you reopen, it goes automatically to the mark up view. VERY DANGEROUS.

After pulling out my hair and several attempts I discovered the problem

Go to View/toolbars/reviewing and select that toolbar. On that toolbar is an icon with a green tick on a bit of paper. There you must accept changes. From then on your document will open up as you left it.

ps
Too bad if you want to leave the editing if you wanted to see it again-it should have an option/preference to open documents up as a final version. HOPEFULLY THAT WILL BE FIXED SOMETIME

The rule is that if you have finalised the changes, they will indeed go
away.

There were far too many disasters with people "hiding" tracked changes in a
document, then, not knowing they were there, sent the document off to a
client.

The client's copy of Word was set to display tracked changes "always", so as
soon as they got the document, they immediately got a list of the real
prices you offered to a different customer. Useful business intelligence
:)

So now, a document will always open with Tracked Changes revealed if the
document contains any. If the tracked Changes display is active, you know
for sure that there are unresolved changes or comments in the document
somewhere that you have not yet removed.

More than this I cannot say unless you tell me which version of Word you are
using.

Cheers

Thank you both...It just seems to be hit and miss with Word 2008. (We have this issue with our PC Word 2003 as well.) We have been accepting all of the changes and saving and sometimes they are gone for good and other times...well...not so much.

I've also had issues with my customized toolbars not staying; some do and some don't....another hit and miss.

Oh well...patience...patience....patience....right?

No: Patience may be highly thought of by your mother, but it has very
limited utility when using Microsoft Word :)

If you accept all changes, then they will go. But if you have Comments as
well, you need to resolve and remove those as a second operation.

If you go to Word>Preferences>Security and enable "Warn before saving..."
Word will warn you if there are unresolved changes or comments in the
document.

Hope this helps

Its funny that you say that about the customised toolbars not staying. I wrote the exact same thing in another post (can't remember where).

It just seems to reset itself every now and then back to the shipping standard tool bar, and giving me back the floating toolbar that got transferred over from 2004.

This is very annoying since I think the main advantage of 08 is getting rid of the floating toolbars and replacing it with the built in one....I can even get by without the toolbox most of the time and love being able to get it back quickly if needed by clicking the icon on my customised toolbar. This way the whole screen can be devoted to my document without toolbars and toolbox getting in the way.

There are three possible types of toolbar:

1) A Built-in Toolbar

2) A Built-in Toolbar that has been customised

3) A Toolbar you create yourself.

Toolbars can be one of three places:

1) The Normal.dotm template (usually)

2) The Attached template (if there is one)

3) The Document (quite rare, you would know if you did this)

Word records in each document which template is attached, and which toolbars
were visible when you closed it.

If you open a document that has a template attached, and the template
contains a toolbar, and the toolbar was visible when the document was last
saved, that toolbar will be displayed when the document opens.

If you open the document on a different computer, or if the template has
been removed, obviously it is not there to be displayed.

If the toolbar was not displayed when the document was last saved, it will
not be displayed when the document is re-opened.

Obviously, this can get very complex. I have two toolbars I made myself
that I use to replace the built-in toolbars. To remove the uncertainty, I
use a piece of VBA to hide "theirs" and display mine, each time a document
pens.

Unfortunately, you can't do this in Word 2008. And my toolbars don't work
there anyway, because most of the items on them fire macros that do things
exactly the way I need them.

So I don't spend a lot of time in Word 2008, except when answering questions
in here :)

Hope this helps

Thank you very much for your help! I will pass the news around the office, and we'll see what happens. I have to say, I am a bit disappointed with this new version of Office. Things that used to function fine, don't. New things that are supposed to function fine, don't. If someone was to ask me if they should upgrade, I would say.....don't! : )

I really can't blame you for not spending time in 2008 unless you have to.

Thanks again so much!!
