Tracked Changes Disappear When They are Hidden During Changes

Dear Mactopia community,
With both Office 2004 and 2008, I like to track changes while they remain invisible while I write, so as not to be distracted.

So I click "Track Changes" but unclick the boxes "show on screen or printed document.

Usually, though, when I try to click "show on screen or printed document", the tracked changes not only do not reappear, but I am unable to click the "show on screen or printed document". When I click on them, they seem clicked, but when I close the window and re-open it, the boxes have been automatically unclicked again.

I assume this is a bug, but any workaround would be very helpful!
