Tracking Actual work for Project Accounting

Perhaps the MS Project Server gods can help me. We have a very large project
involving both enterprise and local resources. The project has been planned
in detail using MS project and reivewed with the audit group, with audit
assigning each detailed task as either capital or expense. This way as
Actual work time is recorded, the costs (time X rate) can be summarized as
capital or expense.

Because this information is used for accounting purposes, it is most
important that the actual recorded time is not minipulated due to any
re-calculations that MS project might induce due to changes to the plan for
"planned start or finish". resource availability (+- 100%, etc.) of
requirement for resources to enter "remaining work" . What is most important
is the resources to post the actual hours worked by task, in the actual
period that the time was worked. In this regard, if the resource failed to
report actual hours in the accounting period, then we loose the
capitalization opportunity. He/she should still report the time in the
correct timeframe, but the capex is lost.

The bottomline here, is we would like to use the Time sheet facility witin
project server for time reporting against tasks... not so much for resource
balancing and planning project durations.

Pretty exhaustive message, but I would greatly appreciate any help I can
get. Thanks, Al_at_FM

Yes, you can use both the 2003 and 2007 versions this way, although I must
admit to not understanding one sentence in your post. The gist of it is
that's it's possible to lockdown the work record in 2003 and fully audit it
in 2007.

If you use managed periods, the actual hours as entered in the time
sheets will always be protected and override any (inadvertent) changes
made in MS Project.

Thank you both so very much for your response. I have one additional
request. How do I set the "Managed Period" function within PS? From another
track I learned that this is an Admin feature accessed via PWA. I am the new
Admin for the PMO, but i don't see it as an option within the Manage
Enterprise Features. What am I missing? We are using PS 2003.

Thanks again... this forum has been an invaluable help to us.

Admin > Customize Project Web Access. Careful though, this is not a
setting to turn on or off just like that. It has significant impact on
your users. Check out the various threads on this topic for useful
info.

like I am missing part of the story- if you could please provide your
comments, I would greatly appreciate it.
