Tracking changes for multiple reviewers: doesn't work!

I've been googling and reading about tracking changes across multiple
reviewers in MSWord.

I'm using MSWord 2001. I think it was part of Office. I'm using OS
8.6.

I'm working with one other guy on a file.

I have "track changes" turned on.

His changes are ID-labeled just fine---if I put my mouse over a
correction, there's his name, date, etc.. He obviously has his name
entered in his Prefs.

My changes are ID flagged as well, no problem.

But all the changes are all the same color!

If I go into my Tools>Track Changes or into my Prefs>Track Changes and
change my colors, it changes ALL the colors: his and mine.

I see all this info in the Help and online about "Word automatically
assigns different colors to the first 8 reviewers on a rotating basis"
or some such.

I *thought* I've had this function working nicely in the past, with
several reviewers. Now, NOTHING!

Help?

Thanks, Jeff Potter

PS: OK, I answered this myself finally! Whew.

"By Author" is the name of a color! And I had to manually select it to
get the functionality.

All the tutorials that I found for this program say that different
colors are automatically assigned to different authors. I did NOT find
that to be so.

Well, I'm back in action, in any case!

When you select "By Author", then different colors are automatically
assigned to different authors.

The setting is per Word installation, not per document. I believe By
Author ships as the default setting in Word (so yes, the colors will be
automatically assigned), but if you ever changed it on your machine, it
needs to be manually changed back.

Glad you solved it.
