Tracking changes hidden trap

Jay Freedman, MVP, explained why y'all changed Track Changes so that even if
you click "Final," to hide the markups when you close the document, it will
open in "Final with Markups," showing them.

However, doing it that way lets the author think the changes are hidden. I
sent a lot of documents before I found out this was happening. In many cases
I want the changes to be available to the recipient *when they request them,"
so accepting them is not a solution for me. I want the edits there but hidden
upon opening.

What I suggest is that if you want to remind people that their changes are
still visible, Word should not let you close the document with the changes
hidden. A dialog box at closing would give people the choice of accepting the
changes or leaving them in, and whether they should be visible or not when
opening.

The setting to "Make hidden markup visible when opening or saving" should
cover closing if you are also saving.

Also, please note that no one in this NG works for Microsoft, so we had
nothing to do with these changes (though we may approve of them).

Thanks, Suzanne; I saw your other post, too.

I know you're all volunteers (thanks again!) but the category was
"suggestions for Microsoft" so I thought maybe they read those.

Meanwhile, I found a setting that seems to have done the trick -- "Warn
before printing, saving or sending a file that contains tracked changes or
comments." It warns every time you save & print, but it's worth it to me to
keep control of what recipients do or do not see.

You get to it by going to Word options, then Trust Center, then Trust Center
Settings, then Privacy Options, and under Document-specific settings,
checking the first item (“Warn…â€). Not the most intuitive of spots, but....

That's the new wording for the same setting I mentioned, so it amounts to
the same thing.

My apologies, though, for missing the fact that you had posted a suggestion
and thinking you were responding directly to Jay. Yes, Suggestions for
Microsoft are supposed to be seen (and responded to) by Softies, but only if
they get a certain (unknown) number of votes, and so far no suggestion
(AFAIK) has ever received enough votes for anyone from MS to respond. A nice
idea (especially given the difficulty of finding any way to submit feedback
to MS), but one that hasn't gotten much traction, I'm afraid.
