Tracking changes

I have XP Pro SP2 and I want to add a program that will allow me to do
editing, tracking changes and seeing the sequence of changes in various
colors. I am writing a book. I also edit articles. I am on a very limited
budget but I would like a good editing program that's not too complicated. I
have a graphics background and I also do photography but I am primarily
interested in a reliable editing program. I am considering MS Works Suite
2004 with MS Word 2002. Is this a good choice? Is the editing function of
Word 2002 reliable and compatible with XP?

Indeed, buying the Works suite is the cheapest way to get a copy of Word. It
will certainly work on Windows XP.
