Tracking in Word 2002 amnesia

When I used to use Word 97, tracking worked fine.

However, now I am using Word 2002, tracking seems to work fine until I
close the document. When I open it again, it appears to have forgotten
about all the changes I made previously.

Is there something I have forgotten to set up properly for tracking, or
is this a known feature/benefit?

I always use Print Layout view. When editing a document with tracking
on, I "Show Insertions and Deletions", and they appear as expected.

But after closing the document and re-opening it, those insertions and
deletions have gone away. I expected them to stay in place until
accepting the changes.

On the Reviewing toolbar, there are four views: Original, Original Showing
Markup, Final, and Final Showing Markup. You have to select one of the ones
"Showing Markup" to see your changes.
