Tracking Notifications

Hi,

I have recently moved from a Novell GroupWise system to a Microsoft
Exchange/Outlook system.

With the Novell system, *internal* mail was tracked by the server.
After one had sent a message, checking the 'Properties' page of the
message (in the Sent Items folder) would give a list of all recipients.
For those recipients who were users from the same domain, the
properties page would indicate whether the user had read the mail,
deleted it and/or emptied it.

I am not seeing this behaviour in Outlook/Exchange. I only get tracking
information if I request a Read receipt - and get deluged by the
arrival of those receipts in my inbox. The envelope icon adjacent to
the sent item is always open.

Is this normal behaviour or has our server been incorrectly set up?

Thanks Milly - it was kind of you to reply.

Obviously the Exchange server knows who has read/deleted all mail it
holds (i.e. all mail in our office). So automatic tracking is
technically possible (it's now Novell do it). So is it possible to
configure Exchange to act in a similar manner to Novell GroupWise?

The reason why we want this is because our office has around 75
employees and the secretaries find it very useful to know who has not
read an email - so they can phone them if something is important but
they haven't read it. They hate being inundated by read receipts. The
requirement to request read receipts anoys them as the automatic
processing of receipts on arrival and moving to the Deleted folder
doesn't seem to be working - they have to actually read or delete the
receipt for its tracking information to be processed. Oh - and the user
can turn off the sending of receipts so the tracking tab isn't
reliable.

Please include the entire thread when responding. It makes it easier to
read what I had responded to originally. I clean up my threads every 2 days
or thereabouts so anything you originally wrote is now gone.

So, my best response would be that Exchange does many things differently
than Novell Groupwise, receipts being among them. So, basically, no, what
you want is not possible in Exchange.
