Tranfer to new PC

O

Old Bill

I am about to change computers and will be using my old Office 2000 disks. I
have religiously applied updates and patches on the old PC.

My question is: do I have to download all these updates etc onto the new PC,
or are there 'patch files' stored on my old PC that I could apply?

Both PC's are stand alone using Win XP Home edition.

Any help on migration would be appreciated.

Thanks

Bill

Hi, Bill,

You'll want to use Office Update to download the latest patches to your new
computer. Alternatively, you can choose to download some of the patches
(those that have "fully downloadable" versions) for future use, if needed.
But if you didn't do that on the first PC, there's really nothing there for
you to copy over and run again.

Each patch should have a pretty thorough description of how to obtain and
install it. This article may help, if you don't already have this info.

Thanks for the reply, but as I have already downloaded them all on the 'old
pc', I am trying to avoid having to go through it all again on the 'new
pc' - time & money etc.

Thanks again.

Hi Bill,

Unless you downloaded the .exe full patch package versions
of the updates rather than using Officeupdate on line
you'll probably need to either download again or
contact MS to see if they still have any Office 2000
patch CDs still available (800) 360-7561 in the U.S.

The .MSP files are stored in the Windows Installer folder
but are renamed from the original downloads and don't
always work reliably when applied from that source on
a new installation.

That's kinda what I said, but not as well as Bob <g>.

There's a fully-downloadable version of many of the updates, and there's the
standard "Office Update" version which is not fully downloadable. To reuse
and transfer updates from computer to computer, you need the
fully-downloadable version. You can get those either by downloading them,
or by requesting a CD.

The link to the article I send will lead you to details on each update and
how you can obtain it in a fully-downloadable manner (if you want to on your
new computer).

Yes, now I understand. Twice bitten, etc. Its just not worthwhile me
upgrading every new release - the Office 2000 I have (Premium) was priced at
over $1500 here in Australia. Just as well it was a gift from MS!! But I
will investigate getting a 'patch' CD.

Thanks to you all - the switchover is going OK also.
