Transfer Data Files

I bought a new bigger hard drive for my laptop. I need to save all my
settings and emails from outlook. I have an old .pst file from the last time
i had to rebuild the drive. I am able to bring it over just fine. I have
another file called gmail.pst that when I attempt to copy it to my external
drive I get an error that reads: "Cannot copy gmail: data error (cyclic
redundancy error)" Obviously, I use a several gmail accounts and I am hoping
that file can save me having to reset everything and save all my emails.

Thanks,

Scot

CRC errors usually point to drive issues. Have you had any other problems
with your original laptop hard drive?

No, I have not had any problems per se. It is just small so I have purchased
a larger hard drive and am transferring all to it.

I'd run a CHKDSK on the drive anyway since CRC errors don't normally just
pop up for no reason.

You could run it from a Command Prompt:
CHKDSK C: /f

Most likely you'll be told that it can't be run now but you can schedule it
for the next reboot. Choose that option and reboot.

Many new disk drives come with a cloning application. Did yours not? The
vendor of the drive may have one available on its web site.

I am starting over because I have a lot of junk bogging my system down. I
was hoping by starting from scratch I could dejunk at the same time.

I ran CHKDSK. When I rebooted it started running it. When it finished it
started windows before I noticed any report or result. Should I assume this
meant all is well?

Is there a way to force a back up or create a new .pst on an external drive?

Thanks again. If I can't figure this out, I may just give up.

There is no reason to copy the PST if you access gmail via an IMAP account.
Create the account again and Outlook will create a new PST

Thanks, Brian. Let me make sure I understand. If I create the new account
in Outlook to POP in my gmail account it will create a new .pst file. Will
that new .pst file have all of my folders, contacts, calendar, etc just like
it is in Outlook on my old drive? If I let it bring in all my old gmail
emails it is over 3000 and would make a big mess.

Thanks, Brian. Let me make sure I understand. If I create the new
account
in Outlook to POP in my gmail account it will create a new .pst file.

Notice I said IMAP, not POP. IMAP accounts always have their own folder
sets and Outlook creates them automatically when you add the account.
That's not true with POP accounts.
