Transfer Files Winword 6 to Works 7

I am using Windows 98 SE and WinWord 6.0. Going to switch to Windows XP
and Microsoft Works 7.0. Can I use 'Backup' to save files on a floppy
and 'Restore' them to the new Works 7.0?
Is there another way of saving the data files from WinWord and
transferring them to Works 7.0.

You should ask this in a WORKS newsgroup, or perhaps in the
word.conversions newsgroup. You need to find out whether Works 7.0 has a
converter for Word 6.0 file format. If it does not, you'll need to first
save the files in RTF format.

And you should probably use the COPY command to put the files onto a
floppy disk, not "backup" and "restore". But I recommend very highly that
you use a program like WinZip to compress them, first. This will also have
the effect of protecting them to a certain extent from "hiccups" that can
occur during the data transfer.

As luck would have it my new notebook has Works 7 pre-installed.
The word processor lists Word 6 as a file type in the file open converters,
but I have no Word 6 docs to check it with. It will not open more recent
Word documents. Works will also open RTF format files and as I seem to
recall that Word 6 docs are in RTF format, I suspect there will be no
problem.

One slight correction: I don't believe that Word 6.0 docs are in RTF format
(like all Word docs, they used a proprietary format) *unless* they were
saved in "Word 6.0/95" format from pre-SR1 Word 97. The file format was
changed between Word for Windows 95 and Word 97, and the original "Word
6.0/95" format used for backward compatibility was RTF under the skin. When
users mutinied, Microsoft quickly back-pedaled and provided (in SR1) a
converter that saved Word 97 docs in true Word 6.0/95 format. In any case,
if Works 7 claims to be able to open Word 6.0 docs, I suspect it can.

Better and better, I have had another look and it will also open Word 97 -
2002 docs', albeit with some limitations, so Word 6 should not be a problem.
It's just a question of selecting the right converter from file > open.
