Transfering .vcf files between databases - categories?

Hi

Trying to share some contacts with a co-worker (we don't have
exchange). I can drag the contacts into a mail and send them than they
can drop the contacts into their Entourage contact window but the
categories don't come with it. This is the case even if we set up the
right categories before dragging them in. Also tried exporting
contacts from Entourage and opening in Excel. The categories don't get
exported and the only choice seems to be to export all or no contacts
into a text file. Help appreciated.

Hi,

Entourage's category associations are *not* stored inside the .vcf files
themselves, which explains why you can't transfer complete contact
information that easily from one station to another. If you are both using
Entourage 2004, however, you can use Entourage's new archive feature
(File>Export, Items into an Entourage archive) to preserve categories. After
the export is complete, you can import that archive into your co-worker's
Entourage database and the categories should be preserved. If that doesn't
work, post back and give us a few more details, such as the version of
Entourage that is being used and so on.

There is an option though.... Use a script to store the category name on
the Comments of the contacts, then another one to restore the categories
from the comments.

Yes, I thought about that, but then I figured that exporting the contacts as
an Entourage archive would be the easiest solution. Of course, the scripts
have a distinct advantage in that they work in both Entourage v.X and 2004
while the archive feature is available in Entourage 2004 only.

In addition, you can easily select a few contacts and export them to vcf
by a simple drag and drop without having to have to deal with selecting
a category to export, et.
