I am a writer, creating large .doc files in Word on Office 04. In my preferred font, Palatino, if I open the document on a Windows computer, the spacing and number of pages is different. As I also include small JPEG illustrations, this messes up the whole layout.

Are there particular fonts that do not create these issues? Or even better, is there a way to send documents in Palatino and preserve the spacing.

Well, there are various revisions of Palatino, so if both the Mac & the PC
aren't using the exact same variation it would explain some of the possible
cause. You might consider switching to one of the fonts furnished with the
More current versions of Office in order to have the best result. The newest
MS fonts designed for 2007/2008 are as close as you can get.

However, that's most likely just a part of the problem. What usually has as
much if not even more impact on document flow is the printer driver. Word
relies completely on the driver for pagination, so if the same driver isn't
used it's likely the file will not paginate the same on both machines - even
if the fonts match precisely.

Both factors are potentially problematic even if both systems are PC s or
both Macs. In fact, I've seen the same document print differently from the
same computer simply by opting to print to a different printer :)
