...PST files belong to Microsoft Outlook and only Microsoft Outlook, hence it
is impossible to export a .PST from Outlook Express (Outlook Express uses
...DBX files). You can export TO a .PST, but this requires Outlook to be
present and setup, not only to access the .PST file (which Outlook Express
cannot do), but also to determine which .PST to use (the export will go to
the .PST file connected to whichever Outlook profile you select). Neither
OE's export nor Outlook's import functions deal with duplicates, they will
have to be dealt with by other means. Also you NEVER want to use Outlook's
Import and Export function to import or export a .PST file. The .PST file
import/export functions within Outlook are broken, they have been for some
time, and using the import function, in particular, has two nasty side
effects:
A. It VERY often causes your Outlook profile to corrupt
B. You lose the following information:
1. Custom Forms
2. Custom Views
3. Connections between contacts and activities
4. Received dates on mail
5. Birthdays and anniversaries in calendar
6. Journal connections
7. Distribution Lists

The answer to your question is "both". He had 2 e-mail addresses coming
into his OE account. He filed messages from theses accounts in personal
folders he created. I asked a co-worker how to proceed and he told me to
import OE account parameters then import the messages and contacts. The
first worked, it imported both e-mail accounts. Then I imported the
messages and contacts. As I mentioned, not all messages were imported. I
did not think to check if the missing items were from one specific e-mail
account or the other.
As for the date, I did ask him if he minded waiting 6 months for the
archiving feature to clean out older stuff since I knew that the date used
would be the "modified/import" date. He did not mind. I added archive
parameters to his Inbox and his personal file folders so that they would
archive as well.
If I were to export a .pst file from OE and import it into Outlook now,
would it create duplicates of all items or does it ask what to do in case of
duplicates?

number of folders in which the msgs werent transfered?
PS If you import msgs in Outllook from Express all the dates are changed to
the Import date, whereas if you export msgs from Express to Outlook the dates
are retained - which may be important to the user

I helped a friend import settings from OE to Outlook 2003. All OK. Then
I imported all messages and contacts. (Both using the File/Import-Export
command). The contacts seem to all be there and the personal file folders
he had created are there. Most of the messages that were in either the
defaultOutlook folders (ie Inbox and Deleted items) or his personal
folders were transferred, but not all of them. I do not know why or how to
get the
messages that are missing. Anyone have any ideas?
