Transferring MS Office 2000 License to another computer

I need to transfer my Micorsoft Office 2000 Premium Edition license from a 7
year old PC that is regularly failing to boot to a newer PC. The newer PC
runs Microsoft Windows 2000, Service Pack 4, which I have kept up-to-date
with regular updates. My Ofiice 2000 Update CDs date from December 2000,
when I bought the Office 2000 as an upgrade to a Dell OEM installation of
Office 98. I bought the Office 2000 Premium Upgrade from a local computer
store, not from Dell. I have two questions:

1) Can I transfer this license to my newer PC?
2) Will using the 4.5 year old Microsoft Office CDs (SR1) on a computer with
a more updated installation of Windows present any problems?

I wish to defer buying any new computers or major software upgrades until
next year, when I will be a full time student and able to buy such at
university discounts. In the meantime, I would like to transfer my Office
2000 license to tide me over until then.

If it's and upgrade to an OEM then NO you can't transfer it.

1) I think you mean Office 97 - Office 98 was for the Macintosh only.

2) Upgrade licences integrated into the original qualifying product.
Therefore, if you have an OEM licence it would depend on what kind of OEM
licence it was. If it was generic, then it would work because you could
simply pop it in when asked and it would (probably) recognise it and
installation would continue. However, if it was integrated into some kind of
recovery or rescue disc (as many manufacturers do these days) then you'd be
SOL because the setup routine wouldn't recognise it. Note, you don't have to
install a QP, just insert the disc when asked.

3) Remember that you void the QP licence by using it to upgrade - it's no
longer a product in its own right, but part of the upgraded licence.

So, whether you can use Office 97 as a QP depends very much on what kind of
OEM licence it was. The short answer is, probably not.

You could always purchase the STE now, no questions asked. It's about £100
cheaper than a Standard Edition Upgrade licence and roughly £200 less than a
full Office Standard licence.

Thanks for your reply! I'm a llittle confused because I do not know what
"QP" means. I think that your are correct, the original Office license was
Office 97, not Office 98.

It shoulds like I will need to locate the original Office 97 CDs to do this.
I don't know if I still have them. I will need to check. Until then, I
don't know what the original OEM license was. Office 97 Professional Edition
came with the PC when I bought it in 1998.

Office Standard Edition will not work for me, as I make extensive use of MS
Access, which I think only comes with professional and above.
