Transferring to New Computer

I am trying to get everything onto a new computer. I thought all my toolbar
setup was contained in the "normal" template, but when I copy that to the
new computer an open Word, I don't get my custom layout. Are some of my
settings in a separate preference file, and if so where is it? I have tried
many ways to transfer my system and user Library/Preferences, but I keep
getting access denied, no matter how I set the privileges at either end. I
also created a new admin user to transfer the Pref files to the Shared
folder, but still ran into permission problems with all set to everyone can
Read/Write. Can anyone help?

You are going to have extra issues if your User Folders are not on the boot
partition. If they are, you should run Apple's Disk Utility and choose the
Repair Permissions option.

Your Preference files are in ~\Library not \Library. Library is locked by
the system, leave it alone. You should not attempt to transfer your
Preference files, they are "personal" to the machine.

Instead, if you have been copying things across, I would remove everything
and start again with a clean install. Locate the Office Remover utility on
your CD and run it. Then re-install Office and run Disk Utility>Repair
Permissions.

Now apply all the service releases in the order described on the Microsoft
website, and repair permissions again.

Now, reboot to cause the system to rebuilt its caches, and start and quite
Word to cause it to initialise its preferences.

All of your important settings are indeed in your Normal Template, but you
first need to make sure that that is the one Word is using.

Check in Preferences>File locations for the User Templates location while
logged in as the user you want to operate under. The User Templates
location is where the Normal Template in use is.

Finally, delete the blank Normal template it has created and empty the
trash, then copy your old Normal template into the correct folder.

That should do it! Your toolbars will all come across, but you will need to
re-arrange them the way you like them: the locations are stored in a
Preference file that gets rebuilt.

Hope this helps
