Transferring Works files into Excel XP

My Dad upgraded recently to XP--all his previous files
were in Works. Is there an easy conversion? I don't
have the ability to "see" his computer, so trying to fix
this issue remotely.

My Excel 2002 and Excel 2003 will open a Works XLR file.
Why can't Dad do this?
