Transparent Background

Bill Haskell

I have been able to make a picture (jpg) background transparent (on white
paper) for years with Windows Word. I'm now using Mac Word (2004) and I
can't get it to work. The Formatting Palette has in the Picture section a
Transparent Color icon, but it is grayed or inoperative. The jpg picture is
selected, but the icon doesn't seem to be operative. How can I make the
white background transparent in a jpg drawing.

How did you put the image inside?
There are 2 ways:
1.Instert>watermark this will insert the image and make it transparent

2. insert the image by Insert>picture> from file
Then you should be able to double click on that image and on the color&lines
tab you are able to operate with the transparency.

If you want to protect your image from unwanted position change I would
recommend you to put it into the header/footer

Hope this helps

Hi Bill -

Without going into a litany of speculation :) my first guess is that the
image - although it may have originated as one - is not really a jpeg any
longer. Depending on how it's been handled it may very well have been
converted to something else along the way & that "something else" doesn't
support the transparent color option... Not everything does, on PC or Mac.
Additionally there are a number of variations within what is categorized as
JPEG so that may have had some bearing as well. Anyway...

Right[Control]-Click the image, select Save As Picture, then choose JPG (or
another format if you wish) from the list of Formats to save a copy in true
jpeg with whatever name you wish. Once you've done that use Word's Insert>
Picture> From File command to insert a copy of the new file & see if you
have better results.

I'm not sure why jpeg was used for a *drawing* in the first place, though.
That format is typically a compromise fro pictures (photos) in order to
support a wide range of color but minimize file size. You may have better
results in the future if the drawings are saved as .gif or .png with the
transparent background "built-in".

Great programs for converting Jpeg or any files to to .png (which
actually the preferred file format over .gif

In expensive: GraphicsConverter

Pricey but infinitely more control Adobe(Macromedia) FireWorks.
