Transparent font isn't?

Hello.

I'm trying to use tranparent text (in Visio 2002 pro) so it looks like it
has been cut out of a photo. Yet when I change the transparency setting for
the font it just gets a lighter shade of gray and never transparent, i.e.,
the object behind is never visible. Am I missing something about the notion
of transparency? Is there another method in Visio to accomplish the same
effect?

Many thanks.

The best I can figure is that text comes as both foreground (the text) and
background. When the text is transparent, all one gets is the background it
comes with. There does not appear to be a way to make an inserted graphic
file become the background of text.

What does work, kinda, is to draw an outline of each letter, place the
letters on an opaque rectangle, subtract the letters, and place the rectangle
over the graphic. Since drawing outlines of letters is tedious and, in my
case, not very artful, I may do something different. Unless someone knows
where I can find scalable outlines of arial black or similar.

Onwards. George
