Transparent tiffs Powerpoint 2003/xp

I have created a master in PP 2003 which includes transparent Tiffs. This
works fine but if I run the presentation in PP XP the backgrounds of the
Tiffs turns black. Using the transparent color tool fixes this but what's
going on?

IIRC, PPT doesn't understand transparency in TIFFs.

It does better with PNGs. You'll lose no quality by converting your TIFFs
to
PNG and can even use alpha transparency in PNGs if you like.

Are you sure it's not just a bug, Steve? From '97 through oh, probably 2001,
before PNG was popular, I used TIF all the time precisely because PPT would
maintain their transparency. I still use them occasionally.

Wonder if Transparent areas of graphics turn black
http://www.rdpslides.com/pptfaq/FAQ00627.htm is relevant for TIFs, too?

Ah, maybe it was that TIFF'n'PPT did one-bit but not alpha transparency?

No, I remember Adam Crowley teaching me how to create alpha channels in
Photoshop to create transparent backgrounds back when it was more
complicated than it is now (you can just select and delete).

That got me started, then I took a real Photoshop class. <g>
