Trouble autoformatting tables

Version: 2008
Operating System: Mac OS X 10.5 (Leopard)
Processor: Power PC

I'll detail my attempts here - perhaps someone has had more luck than me.

1. I've seen articles on creating new autoformat table styles. The method is to go into Table Autoformat and then click "New". The problem is, there's no "New".

2. I've tried creating a Table Style that only applies to the header, but that applies itself to the whole table.

3. I've looked in Word and on the net for an answer on how to create a table header. Fell down there too.

4. Am I right - there is no way to create a table style that formats the header row and the body row within one style?

You won't find much constructive info on Table Styles because they are a
real pain in virtually any version of Word :) And I've never seen any
method of creating a custom Table AutoFormat. For explanation & alternatives
I'd highly recommend that you download "Bend Word To Your Will" - and keep
it handy for expert reference on almost any aspect of the program. You'll
find the information you need starting on page 65 & referenced to page 124:

Post back with any specific questions - the author, himself, is lurking
about here somewhere :)

A big hmmm... I was hoping that within the myriad features of Word, there was
something possible. But thanks for the link.

Well, it is possible, as Bob referenced. Not only that: once you read up on
it, you'll never use anything else to create tables. But hang on: you're not
Gen Y, are you? That will pose difficulties... ;-)

Once you've created a table exactly as you want, all you do is type the
abbreviation in a blank paragraph for that specification of table, such as
2ch [the article explains this], then key Command-Option-v, then hit Return.

Gen Y? I'm 41 - what does that make me?

It would work for me if I created tables. But I;m a designer who's been hired to prettify Word docs. I've overcome many, many obstacles that Word has placed in my way over the years, and I've ended up as one of those rare breed of designers that *also* works in Word. Sort of - somebody's got to do it. It's a pretty good vertical market :D

Is everyone hating this the new Word 2008 like Vista? I am going back to hard entering for the table of contents and table of authorities in my appellate briefs as I spend as much time drafting and researching the 40 page brief as trying to formate these two features.

There are some backward steps. :)

If you insert the TOC and TOA the way you always used to, you will get the
result we always had.

The TOC generator and the TOA generator work exactly the way they always
used to. Insert>Field and choose "TOC" then Insert>Field and choose "TOA".

Those new Table of Contents things are sillier than a chook with its head
cut off. They are an accident looking for a place to happen.

Get rid of them and go back to using the old generated fields and you will
not have a moment's more bother from them.

Cheers
