trouble emailing out of word

Could someone please help me. I've just gotten office 2000
and I can not send my essays to my professor out of word.
I can send it via my regular email. I clicked on send as
an attatchment and nothing happens. Now I can't sign off
word I get a error message saying in order to sign off go
to new message and send or cancel and I have no idea what
to do. I did go to outlook and when i registered I didn't
select outlook as my default mail editor and so now I
don't know how to chage it either.Any help would be
greatly appericated.
