Trouble entering special unicode characters

S

Steve Conover

I've tried to enter the Verdana character for 1/8 (Alt+215B), but
I keep getting the error signal. This has not happened before,
and I don't know what changed. Any suggestions?

Thanks,
Steve

Where are you trying to insert the character? Have you tried copying it
using charmap?

If you enter ALT+8539 (using the keypad), the 1/8 symbol is correctly
inserted.

I'm trying to insert it (1/8) into a PowerPoint text block, but I
keep getting the error beep when I hit the plus key. (BTW, 1/4,
1/2, and 3/4 work just fine.)

I can copy it from charmap, but it was easier when I could use
the keyboard combo. (Also tried it in Word, but that doesn't
work any more, either.)

Please don't hit plus.

While holding down the left-ALT key, type 8 then 5 then 3 then 9 on the
keypad. Then, release ALT.

(Sorry for the delay; Comcast changed news servers on me, and it
took two days to sort out the problem & fix.)

When I do what you describe below, the result is the left square
bracket -> [ . When I hold down Alt, the plus key gives me the
default beep.

None of this used to happen. I could hold down Alt, then press
+215B, and the result would be the character for 1/8. (Also,
FWIW, in the Lucida Sans Unicode font, I could get the characters
for spades, hearts, diamonds, and clubs respectively with
Alt+2660, Alt+2665, Alt+2666, Alt+2663. Those don't work any
more, either.

Try toggling the Numlock key.

I toggled Numlock; same result (default beep).

If you can't do this directly, probably the easiest thing is to create an
Autocorrect rule which converts the sequence 1/8 into the character you'd
like. You can do this using the Tools | AutoCorrect Options menu.

In the Replace box, type 1/8
In the With box, either paste the character, or try typing ALT 8539

Yes, using both.

The only thing that's changed recently is a few VBA macros I
recorded, but I thought I'd been careful not to displace any
keyboard shortcuts. I'll check them for bad behavior.

Hi Steve,

Not to ask the obvious but are you using the 10-key pad and are you
using a standard keyboard?
