Trouble formatting Excel data to be recognized when merged into Wo

Have a spreadsheet that has a column with room numbers i.e. 101, 102, 2A, 2B.
When merging these room numbers into Word the room numbers consistenting of
alpha characters act as nonexistent. I have tried General, Number, Text, and
even created my own Special format but nothing seems to work. I've had a
similar problem in the past with zip codes which seem pretty basic to me! I
can only reliably merge the zip codes if there is an "error" in my Excel cell
"Number Stored as Text". Would appreciate help!

Under Tools>Options>General, check the "Confirm conversions and open" box
and when you attach the data source to the mailmerge main document, use DDE.

Thank you so much for your time! My "confirm conversions" box was already
checked but was unable to find how to use DDE. When connecting my data
source under "Provider" I used OLE DB and under "Connection" my only options
were dBase, Excel, and Access. How do I choose DDE?
