Trouble importing Word doc into new template

I am a novice Publisher 2003 user but have set up a template to imporve the
looks of a 12 page newsletter - let's call it "New". The content is mostly
text, but with some graphs - but no photos etc. I have already prepared this
months newsletter in Word and wish to import from the Word document to create
a Publisher document, based on my new design. However, whenever I do this
the imported text is dropped into the default publisher template, not my new
design.
I did try manually copying across as a work around, but the pasted test did
not take up the new formatting (i.e. Heading 1 was style defined in Word doc,
not in Publisher doc.) I have also tried saving the "New" template again as
a template with another name but it appears to save as a publication, not a
template.

You could paste the text as unformatted and format it in Publisher. Why are you using
both applications? Publisher has all the tools you need to produce a newsletter.
When you save as, files of type, scroll down to Publisher template.

Mmm... I currently use 4 levels of headings as well as bold and italics -
presumably I would lose all this if I pasted the text as unformatted and then
have to manually reformat. Sounds v. time-consuming. Added to which I would
have to do it page by page and deal with the over-run for each page. I still
don't understand why I cannot import into my new template?
BTW I am intending to use Publisher to compose the newsletter (which is done
to very tight deadlines) once I have ironed out these problems and have
gained confidence in Publisher. For the next 1 or 2 issues I want to run them
both to check for teething problems. I also have a number of back issues
already prepared in Word which I want to convert to Publisher so I can use
the smart new design.

Thanks for these. In fact I had already spent some time looking through this
list of articles but not found what I wanted - hence my post on this site.
As far as I could see, I have been doing what the the instructions and you
have told me, but the Word file does not import into the publication (based
