Trouble installing Office 2004 Service Pack 2

Like a previous poster, I am getting the message "Installer could not
locate the correct version of the software required to install this
update." I have tried a standalone download, Auto Update, and
removing and reinstalling Office (more than a five-minute procedure)
followed by the updating wizard, all with the same non-result. I
installed only Word, Excel, and PowerPoint. For the record, I use OS
10.4.2 with the most recent security patch, and until I reinstalled had
Office 2004 up to date as well.

Any suggestions about where to go from here would be welcome.

Have you downloaded the newest SP2 updater (which was announced on
Monday)?

Did you remove Office using the Remove Office application?

Did you reset your disk permissions using the Disk Utility application?

Yes I did, and tried it again today (Friday) with the same result. Info
tells me that the installer itself was created and modified on August
11, and the downloaded disk image was modified September 22, in
agreement with what the MS web page says. I would expect the wizard to
have downloaded the most recent version as well.

Yes, I did remove Office with the Remove Office application, keeping
only the Office 2004 preferences.

Yes, I did reset disk permissions with DU, shortly before first
attempting the SP2 installation, and again since. Nothing unusual
required resetting.

Don't know if that's the problem then, but I'd archive the
~:Library:preferences:Microsoft folder, then run Remove Office again,
removing everything.

If the update is successful, you can then restore the application
preferences from the archive.

Other than that, I don't know... one of my clients just got done
applying the update to a couple hundred machines - it just worked (as it
did with my machines).

I was the previous poster. The problem on my system was,
unfortunately, disk corruption. I tried to use the Disk Utility in OS
X to fix the problem, but it caused a cascading failure that not even
Disk Warrior could correct. I lost everything, but it gave me an
excuse to upgrade to a 120GB drive in my iMac. :) The update went
through perfectly on the new HD.

You might check your logs for any I/O errors that occur when you
attempt to run the service pack. Rebecca Harris from Microsoft was
nice enough to help me find this log entry when I was having the
problem with my Mac.

I hope this helps!
