Trouble opening a Word 2000 document with Word 2003

Today I received a Word document that was created in Word 2000. I have
Office 2003. When I tried to open it, I got the error message: "Word was
unable to read this document. It may be corrupt. Try one of more of the
following: Open and repair the file" (no option to do that/grayed out) or
"Open the file with text recovery converter"- the options button lets you
open as text document.

So, doing that to this document that has inserts, logos, tables, hyperlinks,
etc. show up as jibberish in 66 pages of text. I can open the file just
fine with Word 2000 on another PC. I have downloaded and installed all
Office Updates. No change. What's the fix????

Open and Repair is an option in the File Open dialog (click the arrow beside
Open). It is available for all files.

I should have mentioned that the Open and Repair option is grayed out - so
that doesn't work. Is there a Microsoft patch?
