Trouble opening document as attachment in OL

I'm running Outlook 2003 and Word 2003 (11.80.10.6569) SP2 on Windows XP
Professional v 5.1.2600 SP2 Build 2600 on an Intel PC with 1GB of memory and
an 80GB hard drive.

While in OL03, I've had a problem recently with opening Word documents that
arrive as attachments to email. When I click on the document Word opens (if
it's not already open) and no document is displayed. When I go back to OL03,
I find a message indicating "The system cannot find the specified file".
After closing the message, if I click on the attachment again, the document
opens.

My question is: what do I have to do to have the Word document open the
first time click on it? It worked that way in the past.

Below is the answer from you previous post of the other day when you posted
again because you said that nobody replied.

You should always right-click an
attachment and save it before opening. If you don't want to keep the
document after you have perused it, you can always delete it easily. See:
http://www.officearticles.com/outlo...lder_for_attachments_in_microsoft_outlook.htm

Insofar as it always worked before - doing things incorrectly in Word or any
other application for that matter, is like speeding on the highway - sooner
or later you get caught.

Carol,
Thank your for the reply and let me try this another way...

Why is it that until a few weeks ago and as far back as I can remember(say
when if first became possible for email clients to deliver Word documents as
attachments to emails), that every time I clicked on a Word document that was
attached to an email the document would open and that instead I now get a
message that the "specified file cannot be found".

Setting aside for a moment the issue of whether I "should" or should not
save or open attachments, how about someone focus on telling me why I get
that message and why OL/Word are behaving the way they are so I can get back
to "speeding on the highway dangerously" by selecting the option to open the
file that Microsoft has so recklessly provided!

I have no idea what has changed on your system or why this is occurring. I
can only tell you how you should approach an attachment in Outlook, which I
have done and you obviously do not agree with. As you may have noticed, this
is a newsgroup concerning Word. I suggest you post your question with an
Outlook newsgroup.

Good luck with your speeding!
