Trouble Opening Files

I receive files with a .xls extention from time to time and I am unable to
open them. I can choose to open but it never finishes loading. Is this an
Excel file and if so why can¹t I open it? Thanks for your help everyone!

If you drag the file to the desktop and double-click it, does it open then?

Please, please, everyone; try to remember to state what version of OS &
Office you are using. It makes it so much easier to give relevant advice
when we know your environment.

Thanks so much for your help.

I am on OS X 10.4.7 using Office 2004. Warning: I am new to Mac. I¹ve only
had mine for 2 months.

Dragging it to the desktop did not help. I get an error message that says
³tried to open and then suddenly closed again. Click Try Again to
temporarily restore the application's default settings and open it again.
Click Report to see more
details or send a report to Apple.² It did not open when I tried again.

It sounds very much like that is a corrupt file. Do other excel files open
normally?

If the files were created on a PC it¹s also possible that they contain VBA
that MacXL can¹t handle. If it¹s trying to execute on open that would
explain the behavior. You might try holding down Shift while you open the
file or go to Excel>Preferences>Security to make sure there is a check in
the box to ³Warn before opening...² which will help make that determination
(although it won¹t make the file usable). If that is it perhaps someone can
modify the offending code.

I am sure that the files were created on a PC, although I open PC Excel
files all the time. I will try your suggestions. Thank you.
