Trouble opening office files from windows explorer

I am running office 2000 with windows xp home edition. Every time I try to
open an office file from window's explorer the computer takes up to 3 minutes
to open the file (I have timed it several times). However, if I open the
application, like Excel from the start menu it opens like normal, then if I
open the file from within Excel there is no problem at all.

Has anyone else run into this problem before.
