trouble opening workbooks in xp

I upgraded to xp recently and am having trouble opening up
some workbooks in excel. The workbooks open up fine if I
open up excel first, then search and open the file.
However, I can't open the workbook from the icon on the
desktop or my documents. Excel will open up but the
workbook is not displayed. Anyone have any answers?

Do you get any error messages? (Like cannot find ...)

If yes, sometimes one of these will fix your problem:

Close Excel and
Windows Start Button|Run
excel /unregserver
then
Windows Start Button|Run
excel /regserver

The /unregserver & /regserver stuff resets the windows registry to excel's
factory defaults.

An alternative might be to do:
Try Tools|Options|General|Ignore other applications (uncheck it)
