Trouble posting to newsgroups

Computer 1, a desktop running W2K, SP4, doesn't post to or retrieve
newsgroups. I've tried OE6, SeaMonkey's newsreader, and Xnews. None work.
Email works perfectly, both directions. Also, opening webpages is
virtually impossible, If they open at all, it's very sluggish.

When trying to post a newsgroup message, the error message read,in part,
"The host 'mail.optonline.net" could not be found." This is strange,
because the host is supposed to be news.optonline.net. When I open OE, in
the Folders pane there is an entry called news.optonline.net. If I right-
click on it and choose Properties/Server, the name is news.optonline.net.

Computer 2, a laptop running XP, doesn't post to or retrieve newsgroups
using OE6, but does work both ways using Xnews. (That's how I'm able to
post this.) Email works perfectly, both directions, and opening webpages
is fast. The error message, in part, when trying to post using OE is:
"Protocol: NNTP, Server Response: '441 437 Rejected 473 000001 TooOld',
Port: 119, Secure(SSL): No, Server Error: 441, Error Number 0x800CCCA9."

I'm using a cable connection. For the record, Computer 2 was first
connected to the internet just a couple of days ago; that was the first
time I installed OE and IE on it. Computer 1 is my workhorse computer.
Over the weekend, it got a virus and I had to format C and freshly
install W2K. Everything was working okay. Last night, after loading
several programs, I ran AdAware, Spybot, and installed AVAST anti-virus,
in that order. Everything seem okay after that, but I don't remember if I
actually tried using the internet after AVAST. I powered the computer off
overnight, and when I booted today I had the above problems.

I suspected AVAST, so I uninstalled it, via Safe Mode. I'm still stuck
with the above problems.

No firewalls or routers, but I do have a telephone modem between the
cable modem and either computer. Up until yesterday, it hasn't caused any
problems, so I really don't suspect it, especially since with Computer 2
web pages, email and newsgroups work as long as I use Xnews.

Thanks for your advice.
